陳馬笑如太夫人 Ma Shiu-Yu Chan
November 27, 1921 - February 19, 2015
With great sadness the family announces the passing of Eleanor Shiu-Yu Chan (Ma Shiu-Yu) on February 19 in her 93 year. Daughter of the late Ma Chi Tang and the late Mak Sok Wah. Beloved wife of the late Thomas Man Kwong Chan. Ma Shiu-Yu was predeceased by her brother Joe Ma and sister-in-law Claire. Dear mother of Jick Kong, Carol, Leo (Arlene), Alice (Timothy) and Robert. Loving grandmother of Derek, Tammy, Lawrence (Betty), Cleo (Patrick), Michael (Catherine), Ian and Jenny. Great-grandmother of Austin, Nicholas, Isis and Audrey. She will be fondly remembered by her many family members, friends and former students.
Born on November 27, 1921, In Guangzhou (Canton), with her ancestral roots from Guangdong Province, Shunde District, China, she came to Canada with her family in 1966. Ma Shiu-Yu was an artist, calligrapher, writer, world traveller, radio broadcaster and teacher, who supported many local art and community organizations. She had numerous solo and group art exhibitions in Asia, Europe and North America. In 1970 she established the Ma Shiu-Yu Society of Chinese Painting and Calligraphy, and with her husband, the Chans’ Tai Chi Association. They were the recipients of many awards, including Honorary Citizens of Ontario in 1990. During the last few months of her life, she received care with the greatest respect and compassion from all of the Better Living Health and Community Services Thompson House medical, nursing, home staff and management team.
Visitation will be held from 5 to 9 p.m. on Friday, March 6 at Highland Funeral Home, 3280 Sheppard Avenue East, Scarborough ON M1T 3K3. A memorial to celebrate her life will be held at Highland Funeral Home on Saturday, March 7 at 10:30 a.m. Burial service will be held at Pine Hills Cemetery, 625 Birchmount Road, Scarborough ON M1K 1R1 following the memorial.
